About:
I pitched this concept to Blabbi as I was a fan of the board game and thought that with a few adjustments it would make a great improv show. We developed it over the course of a few months, translated the game for a live environment, and recorded the experience to be used for future social promotion.
Blabbie Game Show- where two teams of improv comics go head to head pitching the most absurd new words they possible can while their opponent has a chance to refute all while audiences vote on a winner.
Since Blabbi was relatively new at the time, this was a perfect pitch for them to increase their brand awareness, teach people how to play the game, and align themselves with an audience that was interested in comedy.
As their brand already leaned into Meme culture and had relationships with influencers and comedians, an absurd but casual game show was a good next step for Blabbi so they gave me and my creative partner Evan McDonald the thumbs up. I handle the majority of the creative concepting and technical solutions during this process and so the following points outline my approach to a unique event like this:
Goals:
- Produce a high quality and enjoyable comedy game show aligning Blabbi to an audience interested in comedy and furthering their brand perception.
- Produce content captured during the event to be used for future promotion.
- Create an event that felt more like a real game show than an advertisement for the game.
Some challenges that we needed to overcome:
- Adjusting the game’s rules to be playable with teams (Blabbi’s original version was designed to play as individuals)
- Displaying the board for the audience to see while also letting the talent interact with the tiles
- Producing this event on a micro-budget as Blabbi was an indie startup at that time.
- Finding unique ways to have the audience play a part in the show.
Our proposed solutions:
- Since Blabbi already had a point-based system to determine a winner, we’d carry over the points system and apply it to each team but, importantly, we’d give each team a couple minutes to argue with each other to give the audience a chance to weigh their options before voting.
- We would use an overhead camera above the board that we would project on-stage to act as a live-feed. We would then add graphics layers incporating an on-screen scoreboard. Members of each team would then walk up from their tables to a central mic and pitch their newly creator word to the audience and place the tiles down on a central game table.
- We suggested partnering with a local comedy venue that could potentially sponsor the event. We suggested using a combination of the equipment our team already had and fill in the rest with equipment we would borrow from our network which, while not ideal since we only owned a couple DSLRs and some broadcast equipment, would be a completely free solution.
- We suggested that we give the audience an auction-house-style paddle which they could flip to “Yes” or “No”. We also suggested that instead of a moderator choosing the winner, that we give the audience total control over who won each round.
Outcomes:
- Overall the rule changes made Blabbi enjoyable to watch other people play. If we were to do this again, we’d make some changes on how long each team would have to pitch/rebute and adjust how the points were totaled for each round but for a more casual environment, it still kept the audience engaged.
- We ended up recording 5 cameras and 6 audio inputs without paying a single cent, which enabled more budget for the following solution.
- The money freed up from equipment was then able to be used to rent out a popular comedy venue for the night- further legitimizing the brand to an audience interested in comedy.
- Audience interaction was a hit- to the point where the audience begain shouting arguments at the comics which made the whole experience even better.
